IMPORTANT MESSAGE REGARDING EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

March 21, 2003

Dear Members of the Old Dominion University Community:

As part of the university's ongoing emergency preparedness efforts, I am writing to tell you about several steps we have implemented in the past week and to recommend certain actions you can take as an individual member of our campus community.

While there is nothing to indicate that Old Dominion University is a target of terrorism, it is imperative to prepare for various scenarios and to be more alert and cautious.

Please visit the university Website, www.odu.edu, where you can access additional Emergency Preparedness information and updates.

University Preparations
*A special committee has been working to enhance safety at Old Dominion and to prepare for possible emergency scenarios.
*We have undertaken training sessions for our resident assistants and other residence hall personnel.
*We have developed and begun implementing a communications plan to provide you with additional information, as necessary.
*We will begin aggressive enforcement of current parking procedures. All vehicles parked in Old Dominion lots must have a valid parking pass. Those that do not have a pass will be towed.
*All employees and students are required to have a university identification card. If you do not have a card, visit the Card Center in Webb University Center.

Individual Preparations
*Carry your university identification card at all times.
*Be aware of your environment and report all suspicious activities to ODU Police at 683-4000.
*Learn the building evacuation routes for your residence hall and academic buildings. Do not prop doors open and always close doors behind you.
*Avoid leaving briefcases, backpacks and purses unattended in public areas.
*Remain vigilant, follow media reports and be alert for communication from the university.

During the next few days and weeks, you will receive more information regarding the university's Emergency Preparedness plan. Please be assured that Old Dominion staff and administrators are working hard to address your safety and security. With your help, we can continue to focus on our mission of education while creating the safest possible environment.

Sincerely,
Roseann Runte
President
