FORMER CLINTON AIDE TO ADDRESS ECON. CLUB TODAY

Gene Sperling, senior fellow for economic policy and director of the Center on Universal Education at the Council on Foreign Relations, will speak at the next Economics Club of Hampton Roads luncheon Thursday, March 27.

Co-sponsored by Old Dominion's College of Business and Public Administration, the luncheon will begin at noon at the Sheraton Waterside Hotel in Norfolk. The cost is $30 for nonmembers. Due to limited space, reservations are required two days prior to the event.

Sperling served in the Clinton administration as the president's national economic adviser and director of the National Economic Council. Known as the "MVP" of the economic team, he played a key role in such initiatives as the 1993 Deficit Reduction Act, the expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit and the technology literacy initiative.

He was a principal negotiator of the 1997 Balanced Budget Agreement. Together with United States Trade Represenative Charlene Barshefsky, he successfully concluded the historic China-World Trade Organization agreement in Beijing and was a key negotiator with Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers in finalizing the Financial Modernization Bill.

Sperling writes a weekly economic column for Bloomberg News (NY), is a frequent commentator on CNBC, Bloomberg Television and CNN on federal reserve policy, consumer confidence, and tax and budget issues and is a contributing writer and consultant for the NBC television drama "The West Wing."
