WILSON BOOK NOMINATED FOR VIRGINIA LIT. AWARD

"Confederate Industry: Manufacturers and Quartermasters in the Civil War," a book by Harold S. Wilson, associate professor of history, has been nominated in the nonfiction category for the Sixth Annual Library of Virginia Literary Awards.

The purpose of the awards program is to honor Virginia authors, their publishers and their literary contributions. The Virginia Literary Awards celebration will take place Sept. 20.

Wilson's book, published last year by University Press of Mississippi, was an alternate selection of the History Book Club. It debunks the myth that the South was nothing but agriculture. In fact, Wilson explains that it was the strength of the Southern business community, particularly manufacturers and quartermasters, that made it possible for the Confederacy to survive as long as it did. Southern mills were appropriated by the Confederate Army to make weaponry, clothing and other materials for war.
