HUMANITIES CONFERENCE IS APRIL 11-12

The Virginia Humanities Conference, "States of Emergency: Crisis and the Humanities," the annual interdisciplinary meeting of the Virginia Humanities Association, will be held April 11-12 at Old Dominion University's Webb University Center.

The conference is one of the biggest events sponsored by Old Dominion's Humanities Institute. Faculty and graduate students from colleges and universities across Virginia and the Northeastern United States will present papers and organize sessions on various issues related to the theme.

Amy Kaplan, president of the American Studies Association and author of "The Social Construction of American Realism" and "The Anarchy of Empire in the Making of U.S. Culture," will deliver the keynote address, "Homeland Insecurities: Reflections on Language and Space," at 8 p.m. Friday, April 11, in room 102 of the Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building.

Artist Boris Zakic, assistant professor of art at Kentucky's Georgetown College, will deliver a second keynote and slide show, "On Translation," at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 12, in room 136 of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center.
