WILSON BOOK INCLUDED IN HISTORY CLUB

A new book by an Old Dominion University faculty member has been included in the History Book Club.

"Confederate Industry: Manufacturers and Quartermasters in the Civil War," by Harold Wilson, associate professor of history, was chosen as an alternate selection by the club, the equivalent of the Book of the Month Club for texts in history.

The book debunks the myth that the South was nothing but agriculture. In it, Wilson explains that it was the strength of the Southern business community, particularly manufacturers and quartermasters, that made it possible for the Confederacy to survive as long as it did, as these mills were appropriated by the Confederate Army to make weaponry, clothing and other materials for war.

"Wilson has mined a mountain of resources, and assembled a truly impressive study that is destined to be a classic in industrial as well as Civil War history," a club reviewer said of "Confederate Industry." "This is essential reading for a complete understanding of the Confederacy."
