HUNDREDS OF HIGH SCHOOLERS VISIT ODU FOR SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

More than 300 high school students are expected at Old Dominion University Saturday, Feb. 1, for its annual scholarship competition at Webb University Center.

In order to qualify for the competition, a student must have a 3.25 GPA, with a minimum 1100 SAT or be in the top ten in a Hampton Roads high school and have completed their application by Dec. 15. Students will be interviewed by university faculty while parents meet with university President Roseann Runte and the university's vice presidents and academic deans and receive scholarship information. The day ends with a university tour and the Old Dominion Monarchs' game with VCU.

By attending the competition, each student is guaranteed a one-time $1,500 scholarship and is competing for up to a four-year, full-ride scholarship. The university annually awards merit-based scholarships worth $1.5 million and total scholarships worth $6.5 million based on students' admissions applications.

To be eligible, students in December 2002 submitted applications including their high school transcripts and standardized test scores. Their community involvement, as well as essays and letters of recommendation, play a part in the determination process.
