CEO OF SENTARA HEALTHCARE IS NEXT ECONOMICS CLUB SPEAKER FEB. 10

David L. Bernd, president and CEO of Sentara Healthcare, will be the guest speaker at the Old Dominion University Economics Club of Hampton Roads luncheon Monday, Feb. 10.

Co-sponsored by Old Dominion's College of Business and Public Administration, the luncheon will be held at noon at the university's Ted Constant Convocation Center. The cost is $30 for nonmembers. Due to limited space, reservations are required.

As president and CEO of Sentara, Bernd oversees an integrated health system with net revenues of $1.6 billion. Sentara is comprised of six acute care hospitals, health plans with 300,000 covered lives, seven nursing centers, three assisted living centers and a 160-physician medical group. Sentara was ranked the number one integrated health care network in the United States in 2001 by Modern Healthcare magazine and is the only health care system in the nation to be named in the top 10 for five consecutive years.

Bernd received a master's degree in hospital and health administration from the Medical College of Virginia in 1973 and served his residency at Medical Center Hospitals. He joined Sentara in 1973 as assistant administrator at Sentara Norfolk General and was named administrator in 1979. In 1985, he was named executive vice-president/chief operating officer of Sentara Health System and president, Sentara Hospitals-Norfolk. He was named president and chief executive officer of Sentara Health System (now Sentara Healthcare) in 1994.

A fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, Bernd serves on the VHA, Inc. Board of Directors; the American Hospital Association Board of Trustees; Cenit Bank Board of Directors; the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce Regional Board; and the Virginia Wesleyan College Board of Trustees. He is past chairman of the United Way of South Hampton Roads Board of Directors and the Virginia Hospital Association Board of Directors.

Bernd was most recently elected as American Hospital Association chair-elect designate for 2003. He will assume chairmanship of the AHA Board of Directors in January 2004. He was the 1984 recipient of the American College of Hospital Administrators' Robert S. Hudgens National Young Hospital Administrator of the Year Award.
