TERRORISM QUILT ON DISPLAY TODAY TO MARK VETERANS DAY

The display of a gigantic quilt that honors Americans killed by terrorists and a solemn ceremony and wreath lying will mark Veterans Day at Old Dominion University on Tuesday, Nov. 12.

More than 200 military veterans on the Old Dominion faculty and staff are expected to attend the ceremony, which will be held at 12:30 p.m. in the North Cafeteria in Webb University Center. The Terrorism Quilt will be on display in the Center Cafeteria in Webb Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Both the ceremony and the quilt display are open the public.

Guest speakers include Rear Adm. David Architzel, commander of Navy Region, Mid-Atlantic, and Alfred Rollins, president emeritus of Old Dominion and a World War II Army Air Corps pilot who was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. The U.S. Atlantic Fleet Band will perform and a solitary bugler will play "Taps." Architzel and Rollins will join President Roseann Runte in laying a wreath on the Old Dominion University Alumni War Memorial.

The quilt, which was begun by Norfolk resident and Navy spouse Elizabeth Barnes as a response to last September's terrorist attacks, resembles the American flag. It is 35 by 63 feet and contains 3,774 different panels honoring victims of terrorism. The flag includes the names of victims over the past 30 years, including those from the Oklahoma City bombing, Pan Am Flight 103, USS Cole and the Beirut bombing.
