SOCCER TEAM DEFEATS RICHMOND; WAKE NEXT

The Old Dominion University men's soccer team defeated the University of Richmond 3-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the ODU Soccer Stadium on Saturday night. This is the first Old Dominion victory in NCAA Tournament play.

The win advances the Monarchs to the second round of the NCAA College Cup where they will play the no. 1 seed Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C., Wednesday night.

Brian Kluckman put the Monarchs on the board with the only first-half goal with 17 minutes left. Kluckman headed in a corner kick, off the foot of the CAA Player of the Year Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia), for what turned out to be the game winner. From that point, Old Dominion played a ball control half complimented by solid defense, as the Spiders were unable to produce a shot on goal in the first period.

In the second half the Monarchs continued their offensive assault. Vendegh reached the back of the Spiders' net for his career best 16th goal after receiving a pass from Anders Haugom (Gjovik, Norway) between two Richmond defenders. The Spiders were unable to bounce back offensively, despite outshooting the Monarchs 11-6 in the second half. Belus Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) netted the first goal of his career with just seconds left to give Old Dominion the 3-0 victory.
