SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS WEEK IS OCT. 28-NOV. 2

Sexual Assault Awareness Week Oct. 28-Nov. 2 will be sponsored by the Old Dominion Women's Center.

Extra-credit chits will be available at programs to verify attendance should faculty wish to offer extra credit to their students.

White ribbons to show support for support for ending violence against women are available in Counseling Services, the Women's Center and at information tables in Webb University Center. Materials are available in the Women's Center (Webb University Center room 1000) for panels in a survivors quilt honoring sexual assault survivors.

Monday, Oct. 28
Candlelight Vigil
7-8 p.m., Webb Center front steps
Join the men of Old Dominion University in this seventh-annual vigil demonstrating men's support for ending violence against women.
Coordinated by Bruce Lynch, Counseling Services; cosponsored by Counseling Services, Men's Center Without Walls and Phi Beta Sigma fraternity

Tuesday, Oct. 29
"Crimes Against Nature," a performance piece written and performed by Chris Kilmartin, associate professor of psychology of Mary Washington College, a funny look at the absurdities and contradictions of growing up male in America.
12:30-2 p.m., room 102, Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building Cosponsored by Women's Studies Department, Men's Center Without Walls, Tidewater Community College Women's Center, Panhellenic Council and Gresham Hall.

Wednesday, Oct. 30
Workshop: "Sex and Violence: Challenging the Connection Portrayed by Visual Media" presented by Tammy Hatfield, Women's Center; and Gregg Henderscheidt, graduate assistant for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender concerns.
12-1 p.m., Virginia Beach Room, Webb Center
This presentation will explore the media's portrayal of the connection between sex and violence.
Cosponsored by ODU Out, Multicultural Student Services and Student Activities and Leadership.

Performance: "Willow Song: In Memoriam"
7:30 p.m., room 104, Batten Arts and Letters Building
A tribute to a student in the Old Dominion theatre program who was murdered in March 2002.
Sponsored by Old Dominion Theatre, Office of Student Services, Multicultural Student Services and Delta Sigma Lambda.

Thursday, Oct. 31
Presentation: "Breaking the Silence of Violence Against Women: A Survivor's Story" by Debbie Miller, graduate student, Multicultural Student Services.
12:30-1:30 p.m., River Rooms, Webb Center
A survivor speaks out about the impact of violence in her life.
Cosponsored by Multicultural Student Services and Delta Sigma Lambda.

Friday, Nov. 1
"Celebration of Hope" led by the Rev. Becky Kiser, university Presbyterian minister.
12-1 p.m., Virginia Beach Room, Webb Center
A recognition of the importance of sexual assault awareness with readings celebrating the gift of recovery and cooperative efforts to stop violence.
Cosponsored by Delta Sigma Lambda

Saturday, Nov. 2
"Self Defense for Women" presented by the Virginia Self Defense Task Force.
Admission: $5, preregistration required by Wednesday, Oct. 30, in Women's Center
10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Cape Charles Room, Webb Center
Self-awareness, education and self-defense tactics presented in a sensitive, respectful manner. Fee includes instruction, manual, kubaton and lunch.
