UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY TO OBSERVE 9/11 ANNIVERSARY WITH MEMORIAL AND CONCERT

Sept. 11 tributes across the nation will mark the one-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, and Old Dominion University will hold a memorial observance from 8:30-9 a.m. on Kaufman Mall.

A bagpiper will lead a procession of university public safety officers, as well as area firefighters, police officers, Port Authority security officers, and military representatives, including some ROTC units and students who assisted in 9/11 relief efforts last year.

Several members of the university community will share remembrances of how that day affected their lives. In addition, the three Old Dominion students and one alumnus who were killed in the Pentagon attack will be remembered at the service, which will conclude with a bagpiper-led recessional and distribution of red, white and blue ribbons.

President Roseann Runte and Acting Provost David Hager have asked faculty to dismiss classes at 8:20 a.m. so they and their students can participate in the observance. Classes scheduled for 9 a.m. and the remainder of the day will be held as scheduled.

At 5:30 p.m. that evening, a memorial concert will be held in the atrium of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center. The Virginia Chamber Players will perform music professor Adolphus Hailstork's piece, "As Falling Leaves," which he wrote in response to the events of last Sept. 11.

Some of the other pieces to be performed include Hailstork's "I Am Only One," by the Old Dominion Women's Chorale; J. Paul Willis's "Who Are the Brave," by the Old Dominion Men's Chorale; Lou Harrison's "Elegy" and Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings," by the Old Dominion Symphony; and John Williams' "Hymn to the Fallen" (from the movie "Saving Private Ryan"), by the Old Dominion Concert Choir and Wind Ensemble.

In addition, members of the university community will read some creative writings they developed in response to Sept. 11, including a poem by President Runte.

The concert and reading are open to the public.
