MUSIC OF COMPOSER AND CONCERT SERIES FOUNDER F. LUDWIG DIEHN TO BE FEATURED IN OCT. 7 CONCERT

The music of F. Ludwig Diehn will be featured in a performance by pianist Jason Alfred and violinist Jeffery F. Kazukiewicz at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7 in Chandler Recital Hall, Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center, on the campus of Old Dominion University. Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door.

Composer and philanthropist Friedrich Ludwig Diehn was a "composer who writes with imagination and intelligence, expresses himself with ardency and leaves an impression of sincerity," according to the Washington Post.

His music has been categorized as luxuriant and full-bodied, climaxing with tremendous uplifting power. He might be called a German Romantic eclectic because he was influenced by many composers. Diehn combined a colorful Romantic style with the sharp rhythms of modern music.

The music of F. Ludwig Diehn will be performed by pianist Jason R. Alfred, a doctoral candidate and a teaching assistant under the direction of Margo Garrett and Karl Paulnack at the University of Minnesota, and Jeffery Kazukiewicz, violinist for the Grammy-nominated Jan Lewan Orchestra. In 1999 in cooperation with Russell Stanger, they instituted an alumni program at the School for Orchestral Studies in Saratoga, N.Y. While there, they premiered Diehn's Sonata for Violin and Piano which, along with his Fantasie for piano, will be featured in this concert.

Tickets for this performance are $15 for general admission; $10 for Old Dominion faculty and staff, senior citizens and non-ODU students; and $5 ODU students with valid ID. Tickets may be purchased at the Arts and Letters box office in the atrium of the F. Ludwig Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center on the corner of 49th Street and Elkhorn Avenue or by calling 683-5305.
