MEN CAPTURE VIRGINIA TENNIS TOURNEY DOUBLES TITLE
Monarch men's tennis members Zoltan Csanadi, a junior from Timisoara, Romania, and Izak van der Merwe, a sophomore from Kempton Park, South Africa, won the 2002 Virginia Invitational flight A doubles title on Sunday afternoon. The duo edged out Brett Ross and Derrick Spice of Wake Forest, 9-8, in the finale.
Csanadi was also in action in the flight A consolation bracket. He fell to David Loewenthal of Wake Forest in a hard fought 7-6, 7-6 match.
The Old Dominion men's tennis team will return to action next weekend at the Ralph Whitaker Clay Court Invitational in Richmond.
For the women's squad, All-American Nataly Cahana, a junior from Qiriat Bialik, Israel, reached the finals of the "William" singles flight at the 10th annual William and Mary Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The 11th-ranked and top-seeded Lady Monarch fell in the final game, 6-3, 6-4 to #14 Alice Pirsu of Pennsylvania.
Cahana reached the finals by defeating #82 Jessica Johnson of Marshall in the semis, 6-2, 6-1. She finishes tournament play with a 3-1 record, with two victories over preseason ITA ranked opponents.
In the consolation bracket of the "Gold" singles flight, Julia Sotiriu, a senior from Wendelstein, Germany, won both of her matches. Temple's Lauren Verrall fell to Sotiriu, 6-4, 6-1, and Boston College's Emily Yeomans lost, 6-3, 6-3.
Freshman Coralie Herrmann of Porrentruy, Sweden, also won both her consolation matches in the "Tribe" singles flight. She posted a three set win over Kandis Batiste of Minnesota, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 and a straight set victory over Richmond's Courtney Klein, 6-2, 6-3.
The Lady Monarch tennis team returns to action next weekend at the Cissie Leary Invitational hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.
