BOARD APPROVES POSTHUMOUS EMERITUS TITLE FOR PATRICK TOW
The Board of Visitors approved a number of measures at its Sept. 13 meeting, including posthumous granting the rank of associate professor emeritus to Patrick K. Tow, Old Dominion's chair of the exercise science, sport, physical education and recreation department who died Aug. 17.
The board also approved a resolution awarding the following honorary doctorates to: Frank Batten Sr., former chairman of Landmark Communications Inc.; Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations; Earvin "Magic" Johnson Jr., a retired Los Angeles Laker and founder of the Magic Johnson Foundation; Elie Wiesel, author of 36 works dealing with Judaism, the Holocaust, and the moral responsibility of all people to fight hatred, racism and genocide; and Wole Soyinka, playwright and first African writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Following the vote, President Roseann Runte noted that passage of the resolution did not mean that arrangements had been made at this point for them to speak on campus.
In other action, the board approved a measure to rename the Filipino American Student Cultural Center to the Filipino American Center.
Also approved were the following title changes in the area of distance learning:
- Edith Barnett, from assistant vice president for distance and extended learning to associate vice president for distance learning;
- Heather Huling, from executive assistant to the vice provost for distance learning to director of planning and development, distance learning;
- Jeanie Kline, from director of distance learning operations to assistant vice president for student and academic support, distance learning; and
- Anne Raymond-Savage, from acting vice provost for distance learning to vice provost for distance learning.
The following administrative appointments were approved for the Office of Development:
- Page Stooks, from acting director of major gifts to director of major gifts;
- Ashley Privott, from assistant director of annual giving to annual fund director;
- Rose-Marie Nsahlai as major gifts officer for the colleges of Sciences and Health Sciences;
- Lynn M. Farrugia as major gifts officer for the College of Arts and Letters and Darden College of Education; and
- Jerome C. Brinker Jr. as major gifts officer for the College of Engineering and Technology.
Other administrative appointments approved by the board included the following:
- Wayne Burton from interim head to head of access services in Perry Library;
- Maria A. Ferguson as university marketing coordinator in the Office of Institutional Advancement; and
- Patricia K. Rapp from acting assistant director to assistant director of the English Language Center.
