'RED SCARE' COMES TO UNIVERSITY GALLERY
Old Dominion University Gallery will open a new exhibition Saturday, Aug. 17, titled "Red Scare," featuring works by Canadian artist Adrian G�llner. The artist will give a presentation at noon Friday Aug. 30, in Room 136 of the university's Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center.
The gallery, located at 350 W. 21st St. in Norfolk, will host a closing reception with the artist 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31. The show continues through Sept. 8.

A contemporary artist working in Ottawa, G�llner is widely exhibited throughout Canada, the Netherlands and England, and has won several public-arts commissions. His largely satirical works employ abstract pattern and graphic design techniques that reference the histories of modern art and the Cold War to create a "faux propaganda." He pays particular attention to points where these histories coincide, such as the development of camouflage, the Russian avant-garde and abstract expressionism.
Works included in the exhibition are:
- "The Crisis series" - the seven letters of correspondence between Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev and U.S. President
John F. Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis transcribed into Morse code;
- "Civil Defense Posters" - derived from the original posters placed in bus shelters in downtown Ottawa, the series reflects the optimism inherent in manuals on how to survive nuclear war;
- "The International Military Aviation Insignia Star Cluster Series" - the pure abstraction of recognizable symbols placed in unexpected settings; and
- "The Target Series" - while resembling targets, the size of the target will be proportional to the caliber of bullet used when firing a specific grouping.
The University Gallery is open from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; noon to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 1-4 p.m. Sunday.
