JONES NAMED TO VIRGINIA MARINE RESOURCES COMMISSION

Cynthia Jones, professor of biological sciences and director of the Center for Quantitative Fisheries Ecology at Old Dominion University, Monday was named to the Virginia Marine Resources Commission.

Jones' appointment to the eight-member commission was announced by Gov. Mark Warner. She is known for her fisheries research.

Russell Garrison of Colonial Heights, an avid outdoorsman and recreational fisherman, also was appointed to the commission. He has experience with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. The two replace John W. "Jack" White of Cape Charles and Henry Lane Hull of Northumberland County, whose terms had expired.

The two appointments pleased many recreational angling groups.

"The Coastal Conservation Association is delighted with these two noncommercial appointments," Jim Haydon, CCA Virginia chairman, told The Virginian-Pilot. "The governor listened to thousands of letters calling for balance on the VMRC. It is obvious that this administration is committed to conserving and restoring our natural resources. A balanced commission will benefit all Virginians."
