ZHOU RECEIVES GRANT FOR PHOTOGRAMMETRY DISTANCE EDUCATION RESEARCH

Guoqing Zhou, assistant professor of engineering technology, recently was awarded $80,000 for his project titled "Geospatial Course Creation: Photogrammetry Distance Education Via Various Media." Paul Kauffmann, chair of the Department of Engineering Technology, is co-PI, and CET faculty John Rand and Vernon "Wes" Lewis are project collaborators.

Zhou was awarded the funding after being invited to make a presentation at the "Geospatial Workforce Development" workshop held in June at the University of Mississippi (UM). Co-organized by Dr. Ahmed Noor, director of the Center for Advanced Engineering Environments (CAEE) and the William E. Lobeck Chair of Advanced Engineering Environments, and UM researchers, the workshop was devoted to the development of a comprehensive curriculum incorporating the science, technology, and applications of remote sensing. CAEE is assisting the Center for Geospatial Workforce Development in this $3-million-per-year effort.

Zhou joined the Old Dominion faculty in fall 2000. He is the recipient of the prestigious American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing Tonelson Award for his contributions to the Ikonos satellite imagery modeling and simulation project. In May 2001, he was named a NASA Institute for Advanced Concepts Fellow.
