WOODS WINS STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT POST

Larry Woods, an information technology student from Virginia Beach, is the new president of Old Dominion's student body.

The announcement comes three months after the election. The delay was caused by a challenge to the election results by former president Philip Newallo, who ran for re-election against Woods. The April vote favored Woods 786-479, but Newallo challenged the results, accusing Woods of election violations.

The Student Senate's Election Committee found Woods guilty, but did not disqualify him. The Student Senate's General Assembly concurred, but considered disqualification. The motion did not pass, however. As president, Newallo vetoed the vote. Confusion ensued over what the veto meant and whether it fell within Student Senate rules.

The two candidates agreed to arbitration to decide the outcome. Norfolk attorney James S. Matthews issued a decision July 3 naming Woods the winner.

During the campaign Woods said his primary goal was to increase student involvement on campus.
