ADVERSARY OPENS SATURDAY AT UNIVERSITY GALLERY
Adversary, a traveling exhibition of contesting graphic design curated by Old Dominion faculty member Kenneth Fitzgerald, will open Saturday, July 13, with a 6 p.m. lecture by artist Rick Valicenti and a 7 p.m. reception at the University Gallery, 350 W. 21st St., Norfolk.
The exhibit will run through Aug. 11. Hours are noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 1-4 p.m. Sundays. Admission is free.
The purpose of the exhibit is to challenge or expand common conceptions of design's purpose, content and process. A primary challenge is to the construction of design as solely a commercial activity -- and which promotes the politics of a consumer culture. Print and interactive works directly confront this representation or offer alternate forms of contents.
Adversary features design made expressly for the exhibition along with pre-existing work from a variety of contexts. Artists include professional practitioners, academics and graduate students.
