VETERANS AND MILITARY HISTORIANS GATHER TO REMEMBER KOREAN WAR JUNE 26-27

Veterans and military historians from around the world will gather for an international symposium honoring the 50th anniversary of the Korean War June 26-27 at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.

Sponsored by Old Dominion, the General Douglas MacArthur Foundation and the City of Norfolk, "Understanding & Remembering: 50th Anniversary of the Korean War" will examine political and military dimensions of the war and its impact on the people of Korea and the thousands of armed services personnel from the 21 nations involved.

Retired four-star Gen. Frederick "Fritz" J. Kroesen, who saw action in World War II, Korea and Vietnam during his 40-year Army career, will deliver the symposium's keynote address at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 26.

The Republic of Korea's first four-star general, Sun Yup Paik, will be the luncheon speaker at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Currently chairman of Korea's 50th Anniversary of the Korean War Commemoration Committee, Paik served as chairman for the Republic of Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff and ambassador to Taiwan, France and Canada, among other countries in Africa and Europe.

The schedule for the two-day event is as follows:

11:30 a.m. Luncheon Address
1 p.m. Strategic Coalitions
3 p.m. Conduct of the War: Ground Operations

Thursday, June 27
9 a.m. Conduct of the War: Air Operations
11 a.m. The Truman/MacArthur Controversy
12:30 p.m. Lunch
1:30 p.m. Legacies of the Korean War
3:30 p.m. Veterans Remember

The symposium costs $25 and includes continental breakfast and lunch both days. Registration is required and is limited to 500 participants. For more information or to register contact the MacArthur Foundation at 441-2965.
