SEVEN SAILORS NAMED ALL-AMERICANS
Senior Brad Funk of Harbor Bluffs, Fla. and junior Sally Barkow of Nashotah, Wisc. repeated as first team ICSA/Ronstan All-American sailors. They were joined on the All-American squad by their teammates Matt Allen of Beverly, Mass., Elizabeth Biondi of Norwalk, Conn., Elizabeth Bower of Fairport, N.Y., Corrie Clement of Metarie, La., and Anna Cobb of Mechanicsville, Va.
Funk, who was one of four finalists for Collegiate Sailor of the Year, finished second at the ICSA Singlehanded National Championships last November and skippered the Monarchs to sixth at the Team Race championships and fourth at the coed dinghy championships. Funk was also selected Male Athlete of the Year in April by the Old Dominion University Alumni Association.
Barkow earned her third straight All-American honor. In the fall, she placed third at the ICSA Women's Singlehanded National Championships, and skippered the Lady Monarchs to the Women's national championship last week.
Allen skippered ODU's B division boat in both the Team Race and Co-ed Dinghy national championships. Clement, skippered the Lady Monarchs B division boat as ODU won the ICSA Women's National Championship.
Monarchs who earned All-American crew honors were Anna Cobb, Elisabeth Biondi and Elizabeth Bower. Biondi is a repeat selection from last year.
Collegiate sailing has six national championships throughout the year, three in the fall, and three in the spring. Old Dominion qualified for five, taking second in the men's singlehanded and third in the women's, held at ODU in November. In the spring, the Monarchs captured the women's national championship, took sixth in the team race and fourth in the dinghy. During the season, the ODU sailors ranked number one nationally in the coed top twenty and second in women's sailing.
