OLD DOMINION GOLFER TO COMPETE IN PALMER CUP

Old Dominion University junior Geoffrey Harris of Reading, England has been selected as a member of the 2002 Palmer Cup Team for Great Britain and Ireland. This year's event will be held at Doonbeg Golf Club in County Clare, Ireland, July 11 and 12.

Named in honor of legendary golfer Arnold Palmer, The Palmer Cup is an international golf competition that annually pits the the top eight collegiate golfers from the United States against their counterparts from Great Britain and Ireland.

Harris, who ranks ninth in the NCAA South Region, registered a first and three seconds during the fall season. In the spring, Harris had five top 10 finishes, including a second and a fourth place finish. He was named CAA golfer of the year.

In the fall season, Harris lost the Mid Pines Tournament in a play-off and ranked second nationally with a 70.0 stroke average. He placed ninth at the CAA Championships.

"This was one of my goals this year, " said Harris. "It is quite an honor to represent your country against some of best collegiate players in the world."

The USA squad will consist of the top eight American golfers, Bill Haas of Wake Forest, Ryan Hybl of Georgia, John Klauk of Texas, Hunter Mahan of Oklahoma State, Troy Matteson of Georgia Tech, D.J. Trahan of Clemson, Nick Watney of Fresno State and Lee Williamson of Purdue.
