FIELD HOCKEY STAR, SAILOR NAMED ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

Senior field hockey star Adrienne Yoder (Coopersburg, Pa.) and senior sailor Brad Funk (Harbor Bluffs, Fla.) were named Old Dominion's Athletes of the Year by the Alumni Association. Senior baseball player Jared Musolf (Lakehurst, N.J.) and women's soccer goalkeeper Alison Kinsler (Virginia Beach) were named the 2002 Jack Wilkins/James Howard Scholar Athletes of the Year.

Yoder is a two-time first team All-American in field hockey. She helped lead the Lady Monarchs to a 18-5 record and the CAA championship. The Lady Monarchs, ranked number one in the nation, reached the NCAA regional finals. Yoder anchored ODU's tough defense and earned CAA Player of the Year and Co-CAA Defensive Player of the Year honors. The CAA Tournament MVP was named first team All-South Region and earned Player of the Year honors in Virginia. Yoder closed out the season with 36 points on 12 goals and a team leading 12 assists. A three-time Academic All-American, she is majoring in biology education.

Brad Funk has been the skipper of the Monarchs nationally ranked sailing squad. In the fall, he finished second at the ICSA Singlehanded Sailing National Championships held at ODU. Funk captured the MAISA District sailing championships along with winning the Navy Fall Intersectional and the War Memorial regatta. Last year, Funk finished seventh at the Singlehanded National Championships. In the spring he skippered the Monarchs to second place in the MAISA District Team Race championships, which qualified the team for the national championships in Honolulu, Hawaii, where they placed sixth. He is majoring in sports management.

Named after two founders of the Intercollegiate Foundation, the Jack Wilkins/James Howard Scholar Athletes of the Year are presented to the male and female senior athletes with the highest grade point averages.

Alison Kinsler is a three-year letterwinner on the women's soccer team. She recorded a 1.05 goals against average this year and carries a 3.98 grade point average in biology. Alison was recently commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army, under the Health Professional Scholarship Program. She will begin medical school in the fall.

Jared Musolf has been a four-year letterman on the baseball squad. Prior to a knee injury last year, Jared ranked second in the CAA in hitting with a .413 average and earned first team All-CAA and All-Region as a sophomore. Musolf has a 3.68 grade point average in health and physical education.

Old Dominion University also inducted four former athletes and a former coach posthumously into the school's Sports Hall of Fame. They included: Mike Berticelli (former soccer coach-deceased), Maaike Hilbrand (field hockey), Celeste Hill (basketball), Alan Schulte (golf) and Ben Ward (wrestling).
