JAPANESE SCHOLAR TO DELIVER HUMANITIES LECTURE APRIL 4

Yoneyuki Sugita of Osaka University of Foreign Studies will deliver a lecture on "The History of U.S.-Japanese Foreign Relations" for Old Dominion University's Humanities Lecture Series at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 4, in the Batten Arts and Letters Building, room 104.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Sugita will discuss American influence and dominance in Japan as well as postwar development in the Asian-Pacific between 1945-52. He will attempt to defend the belief that American influence eroded, under its own weight, but had never been absolute.

Sugita has received numerous grants and fellowships, including a Fulbright Travel Grant, Japan Association of International Relations Foreign Conference Grant and a Domestic Fellowship from the American Studies Foundation.

Sugita is the author of "Irony of Hegemony: The Asia-Pacific War and U.S. Policy Toward East Asia" and "Computing for Humanities and Social Sciences." He is the co-editor of "American Influences in Asia: Transpacific Relations in the Twentieth Century." Sugita earned his master's in law from Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo and his doctorate in history from the University of Wisconsin.
