FILIPINO CENTER TO SPONSOR LECTURE FRIDAY

Old Dominion University's Filipino American Student Cultural Center will welcome Nicanor G. Tiongson, professor of film and audiovisual communication at the University of the Philippines-Diliman, as the speaker for its inaugural Philippine Lecture, 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 12.

The free lecture will be held at the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center, 1881 University Drive.

His topic, "The Ecology of Philippine Culture," will walk through the web of religion, politics, geography and weather that combine to create Filipino culture. The lecture will address what it means to be Filipino in America.

As a visiting professor in the Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies at the University of California, Tiongson teaches a course on Philippine cinema. He also is a librettist, and his works include two librettos for the modern dance pieces "Siete Dolores" (1989) and "Adarna" (1990). His most recent work is based on "Ramayana."

Tiongson has published several pioneering books on Philippine theater and film. In 1999-2001, he edited Pelikula, a journal of Philippine cinema.
