'COMBATING TERRORISM' IS FOCUS OF NATO SYMPOSIUM MAY 13-14

Leaders from across the country and around the globe will gather to discuss "Combating Terrorism: A Global Approach?" Monday and Tuesday, May 13-14, at Old Dominion.

Sponsored by the university and Allied Command Atlantic, the symposium is an opportunity for government officials, academic analysts, high-ranking military officers and media to address the essential questions of security and define a comprehensive approach to terrorism.

The conference will be launched by Gen. William F. Kernan, NATO's Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic, who will give "The Strategic Vision" of the issues and the event, and President Roseann Runte, who will offer "The Scholar's Perspective."

Other topics and speakers include:

-"The Expanding Dimensions of Transatlantic Security," Carl Bildt, former special envoy to the Balkans and former prime minister of Sweden;

-"European Perspectives on Global Terrorism," Wolfgang Ischinger, German ambassador to the United States;

-"Global Terrorism in the Middle East," Nabil Fahmy, Egyptian ambassador to the United States;

-"Asian Dimensions of the War on Terrorism," Michael Armacost, president of the Brookings Institution and former U.S. ambassador to Japan;

-"Emerging Security Imperatives," John Hager, Virginia Office of Commonwealth Preparedness.

Additionally, the symposium will address "U.S. Perspectives on Global Terrorism," "Security Challenges � Post September 11," "North American Cooperation in Countering Global Terrorism" and "The Media and the War on Terrorism."
