'SUPERSTAR' CLOSES THIS WEEKEND

Old Dominion University Theatre's production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar" closes this weekend.

The final performances will be 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, March 7-9, at the University Theatre.

The show marks the first time a Broadway musical will be mounted by the university's theatre program. Earlier in Old Dominion's history, some musicals were produced by Actors Regional Theatre, a community-based program under the direction of the late Paul Dicklin when he led Old Dominion's theatre program.

"Jesus Christ Superstar" reached instant fame in 1971 when it was introduced on Broadway. Conceived as a contemporary retelling of the passion of Christ and the events leading to his crucifixion, the musical stirred a sea of religious controversy. The popularity of Weber's interpretation set the stage for later blockbusters "Les Miserables," "Cats" and "Miss Saigon."

Director Christopher Hanna, theatre program director, has boldly reinterpreted this rock-opera through a fresh production approach.

"Staging 'Jesus Christ Superstar' is the thrill of a lifetime for me," Hanna said. "My love for its music and message as a young adult provided inspiration for who I am artistically and spiritually."

Students in both the theatre program and music department, as well as members of the local acting community, are involved with the production. Music faculty member Kevin Long is the show's musical director.

Others on the production team include Konrad Winters (set design), Angela Winters (costume design) and Phillip Watson (lighting design). Guest artist Karma Butler and Old Dominion student Vera Hendricks are the show's choreographers.

Old Dominion's University Theatre is located in the Technology Building at the corner of 46th Street and Hampton Boulevard. General admission is $12. Individual admission for students, groups, Old Dominion faculty and senior citizens is $8; the cost is $5 for Old Dominion students with ID. For reservations or more information, call 683-5305.
