RENOWNED PIANIST JOSEPH KALICHSTEIN IN CONCERT MARCH 18
One of the world's foremost pianists, Joseph Kalichstein, will perform for Old Dominion's F. Ludwig Diehn Concert Series at 8 p.m. Monday, March 18, in Chandler Recital Hall of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center.
The program includes Brahms' Three Intermezzi, Op. 119; Variations in F-sharp minor on a theme by Schumann, Op. 9; Three Hungarian Dances; Bach's Chaconne in D minor arranged by Brahms; and Schumann's "Kreisleriana." The concert is free and open to the public.
Acclaimed for the heartfelt intensity and technical mastery of his playing, Kalichstein has enthralled audiences throughout the United States and Europe as an orchestral soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. He is chamber music adviser to the Kennedy Center, where he has given solo recitals, and has appeared with the National Symphony Orchestra under Leonard Slatkin, and played a major role in chamber music festivals devoted to Brahms and Beethoven.
Recent performances have included appearances with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic, the Franz List Chamber Orchestra, the Barcelona Symphony and the Monte Carlo Philharmonic. He also has performed at the Prague Autumn Festival.
His solo engagements have included appearances with the New York Chamber Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic and Utah Symphony, and he has given chamber music master classes and concerts with Isaac Stern in Japan.
His recent recordings include the Mendelssohn Concertos (on Nimbus) and solo works by Schumann and Schubert (on Audiofon). His latest Audiofon release, "The Romantic Piano," features the works of C.P.E. Bach, Brahms, Mendelssohn and Schubert.
Kalichstein's March 18 concert is in conjunction with the 14th Annual Old Dominion University Classical Period Piano Competition.
