JANET RENO TO SPEAK MONDAY FOR LECTURE SERIES

Janet Reno, former U.S. attorney general and current Florida gubernatorial candidate, will speak Monday, March 11, as part of Old Dominion's President's Lecture Series.

The talk, "The Legal Profession as Problem Solvers and Peacemakers," will be held at 8 p.m. in the North and South Cafeteria of Webb Center. It is free and open to the public.

As the country's first female attorney general, Reno directed the world's largest law office for almost eight years. Responsible for the enforcement of federal laws and for defending the government in court, Reno was this country's longest-serving attorney general since before the Civil War.

During her tenure, crime was dramatically reduced. She used the authority of her office to enforce civil rights and environmental and health statutes, and worked to bring "justice" to the Department of Justice. She also made headlines for the 1993 federal raid on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, and the 2000 raid in Miami that resulted in Elian Gonzalez's return to his father in Cuba.

Reno graduated from Cornell University and Harvard University School of Law. Before her appointment as attorney general in 1993, she served as the State's Attorney for Dade County, Fla., for 15 years.
