ENVIRONMENTAL FORUM TODAY WILL ADDRESS ECONOMIC ISSUES OF COMPLIANCE

From clean-ups to prevention, storm water to bio-waste handling, brownfields to wetlands, Environmental Forum 2002 will address the economic impact and importance of environmental compliance and non-compliance.

Sponsored by Old Dominion University's Center for Continuing Engineering Education, the forum will be held 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 12 in Webb University Center.

The symposium is geared toward businesses and workers responsible for or impacted by environmental legislation and regulations. Under the theme "Environmental Awareness Makes Economic Sense," the forum will feature panel discussions, breakout sessions and cracker barrel sessions, a series of concurrent sessions that take place in the same room and are repeated three times.

John Hager, assistant to the governor for commonwealth preparedness, will give the luncheon keynote address on "The Economic and Environmental Impact of Bio-Terrorism. Susan Hazen, deputy assistant administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency Office of Pollution, Pesticides and Toxics, will give the opening remarks and Harry Gregori, director of the Department of Environmental Quality's Division of Pollution Prevention and Compliance Assistance, will give the forum's closing remarks.

Discussion session topics include:
* bio-hazardous waste and waste minimization;
* pre-treatment water program and Elizabeth River Project;
* brownfields and wetlands;
* storm water;
* emissions;
* TBT;
* aquatic invasive species; and
* DEQ regulations update.
