CULTURAL MATINEE EXPLORES PARODIES, SATIRES, TRAVESTIES

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures will present its seventh cultural matinee, "Culture Into Comics: Parodies, Satires, Travesties," from 3-5 p.m. Friday, March 22, in the Burgess Room of the Batten Arts and Letters Building.

For centuries, cultures have celebrated and satirized themselves through comedies and parodies. Members of the foreign languages and literatures department will illustrate this process of cultural (re-)production through a variety of art forms, ranging from Don Quixote in Spain and French and German political caricatures, to the reception of Walt Disney in Latin America. In addition, members of the Virginia Opera will perform musical pieces that will include features of operatic tragedies and travesties.

The performance is free and open to the public; light refreshments will be served. For more information call 683-3981.
