BOB BRAY, FORMER DIRECTOR OF ELC, DIES FEB. 11

Robert B. Bray, former director of the English Language Center, died Feb. 11. A native and resident of Norfolk, he was 51.

He retired in October 2000 after 16 years as director of the English Language Center. He taught in the center for two years prior to becoming director.

Bray also served as associate director of the Office of International Programs and as its acting executive director from August 1999 through May 2000. Bray was a past president of the Virginia affiliate of TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages). He also was a former chair of TESOL's Higher Education Interest Section and had served as national chair of the Administrators and Teachers in English as a Second Language professional section of NAFSA: Association of International Educators.

At Old Dominion, Bray was credited with building the faculty and staff of the English Language Center into a nationally recognized English study and training program. He developed ties with a wide range of university partners, including Kitakyushu University, Deutsche Telekom, the Edmund Muskie Fellowship Program and the University of Blumenau in Brazil.

Survivors include his parents, Judge and Mrs. Jerry G. Bray Jr. of Virginia Beach; and three brothers, Jerry Randolph Bray of Southern Shores, N.C., Donald Lee Bray of Virginia Beach and Stephen Gary Bray of Alexandria, Va.

Memorial donations may be made to the Educational Foundation, 129 Koch Hall.
