STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS WIN SCHEV GRANT TO FUND LEARNING LAB ON DIVERSITY

Three student organizations have been awarded a $3,000 grant from the State Council of Higher Education's "Students Improving Campus Climate" program to offer a one-day diversity learning lab about stereotypes and multiculturalism.

The lab, Speak 2002 (Students Promoting Action, Education and Knowledge), will take place April 6 and cover the following topics:

-Language use and how commonly used words maintain stereotypes and social constructs;

-Recognition of different cultures in the same country and recognition of differences within the majority culture; and

-Plans aimed at getting student organizations to work together and be proactively multicultural in their programming.

The winning proposal was submitted by leaders of the Latino Student Alliance, Asian Pacific American Student Union and the Gay Lesbian Bisexual Student Allies.

The focus of the SCHEV program is to support programs and activities designed to create a supportive campus atmosphere for learning for all students.
