OLD DOMINION STUDENT NAMED TO USA TODAY'S ALL-USA COLLEGE TEAM

Old Dominion University student Rosemarie Liu, a biological sciences major, has been named to the third team of USA Today's 2002 All-USA College Academic Team, the second time an Old Dominion student has been so honored. Kristine Gonzalez, a 1999 Old Dominion graduate from Suffolk, was named to USA Today's Third Team in 1999.

Liu, a native of Burke, Va., was one of 50 students selected from nearly 1,000 applicants nominated by colleges and universities across the country. Judges -- all educators-- considered grades, academic honors, leadership roles on and off campus, students' use of their talents beyond the classroom and the ability to express themselves in writing.

A senior, Liu is enrolled in the joint Old Dominion University/Eastern Virginia Medical School Program in medicine. The B.S. to M.D. program offers qualified students admission to the university and, upon graduation, guaranteed admission to EVMS.

Her goal is to become a family physician and a concert violinist. She has studied violin at the Universitat Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, one of the most prestigious music conservatories in the world.

Liu's distinction is the fourth prestigious award won by Old Dominion students in recent years; Samantha Salvia was named the university's first Rhodes scholar in 1996 and Kendra Langlois was chosen as the university's first Truman Scholar in 1998.
