NA'IM AKBAR WILL DELIVER BLACK HISTORY MONTH LECTURE ON FEB. 28

Old Dominion's celebration of Black History Month will conclude Thursday, Feb. 28, with a talk by psychologist Na'im Akbar.

Akbar, acclaimed by Essence Magazine as "one of the world's preeminen psychologists and a pioneer in the development of an African-centered approach in modern psychology," will deliver the Black History Month Lecture at 7 p.m. in the North Cafeteria of Webb Center.

Akbar teaches psychology at Florida State University and heads a private consulting firm, Mind Productions and Associates Inc. He formerly taught at Norfolk State University and was chair of the psychology department at Morehouse College for three years. He earned his bachelor's and doctoral degrees in psychology at the University of Michigan.

The author of nine books, Akbar conveys the message: "Black people in America have much greater inner power than they realize, but they must rediscover themselves in order to use it." His books include "Breaking the Chains of Psychological Slavery" (1996), "Light From Ancient Africa" (1994) and "Visions for Black Men" (1992).

His latest work, "Know Thy Self" (1998), draws from Carter G. Woodson's concept of "miseducation" and identifies what real education should be for human beings, but particularly what education must be for people of African descent. ("Know Thy Self" is available at the Multicultural Book Club display in the University Bookstore.)

Also scheduled in observance of Black History Month is a Black Inventors Exhibit, which will be on display from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22-23, in the North Mall, Webb Center.

"A Greek Tragedy: A Study in Racism," a discussion of the impact recent incidents at Auburn University have had on Greek campus life, will be given at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, in the Hampton/Newport News Room of Webb.
