MUSLIM FEMINIST TO SPEAK TONIGHT ON ROLE OF WOMEN IN ISLAM
Aminah Assilmi, director of the International Union of Muslim Women, will give a lecture at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, in the North Cafeteria of Webb University Center.
Her talk, "The Role of Women in Islam," will present essential background information that led to the current conditions of Muslim women around the world in an attempt to increase public awareness and understanding of the faith.
Assilmi, a former Southern Baptist, radical feminist and broadcast journalist, cautions critics who say that women are oppressed in some predominately Muslim countries. She says their practices are cultural, not Islamic.
The Muslim Student Association, which will deliver a video presentation at 6:15 p.m., is sponsoring the program.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
