JOHANNES QUARTET COMING TO CHANDLER RECITAL HALL TONIGHT

The enthusiastically acclaimed Johannes Quartet will perform works by Hayden, Berg and Mendelssohn at 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, in Chandler Recital Hall of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center.

Although the concert is free and open to the public, seating is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Johannes Quartet brings together Robert Chen, concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony, C.J. Chang and Peter Stumpf, associate principal viola and cello of the Philadelphia Orchestra, respectively, and Soovin Kim, winner of the Paganini Violin Competition in 1996 and the first American to win the competition in 24 years.

The quartet, which made its debut in 1998, was described by the Philadelphia Inquirer as having "accurate intonation, vigorous interaction and careful regard for the details in the score, the passion and attack that characterize the best of quartet playing."

Each of the musicians has spent summers at the celebrated Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont and participated in the New York String Seminar at Carnegie Hall. In New York, the quartet has appeared in the Schneider Series at the New School and the Peoples' Symphony Concerts at Town Hall.

The quartet will also give a Diehn Master Class at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 12 in Chandler Recital Hall.
