GERMAN FILM SERIES CONTINUES TODAY

The series "New German Film: Beyond Fascism" continues with a screening of Werner Herzog's "Woyzeck" (1978) at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, in room 107 of the Diehn Center. It is free to members of the campus community.

"Woyzeck" (in German with English subtitles) represents one of the most extraordinary events in the history of literature. Based on a book written in 1836, just before its author's death at the age of 23, the drama anticipates by some 50 to 100 years the literary movements of the 20th century. This caustic tragedy of an ordinary man's headlong plunge into madness and murder is filmed with a terrible clarity, punctuated by bursts of unexpected lyricism.

Liliana Cavani's "The Night Porter" (1974) will be shown March 5 (same time and location). It is a controversial film (in English) about the perverse relationship between a former SS officer from a Nazi concentration camp and a woman who is a former inmate at the camp.

Heidi Schlipphacke, assistant professor of foreign languages and literatures, will introduce the films.
