THREE STUDENTS RECEIVE DISTINGUISHED ARMY ROTC AWARDS
Cadets William M. Philyaw III, Robert L. Kost, and Leesa M. Potter, all of Norfolk, were honored during Old Dominion University's Army ROTC Civilian-Sponsored Award Ceremony Jan. 25.
Philyaw received the Bank of America Abrams Award and the Daedalian Society Award. As an Abrams Award recipient, he was presented a plaque and $1,000. A senior and cadet battalion commander, Philyaw is also a member of the Simultaneous Membership Program with the 54th Field Artillery Brigade, Virginia National Guard.
With a 3.52 grade point average in information systems, Philyaw is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society. He also is a member of Sigma Pi fraternity and is featured in the "Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.
The captain of G Company, the 19th Regiment Scabbard and Blade Military Honor Society, Philyaw was recognized with the RECONDO Award for achieving the highest score at Advance Camp 2000.
Kost was honored with the Air Force's Communication and Electronics Association Award, which includes $2,000. A junior and recipient of a Governor's Technology Scholarship, Kost has a 3.39 GPA in computer engineering.
Kost is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Golden Key National Honor Society and "Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities". He is completing a co-op with Northrop Grumman in Newport News.
Potter was honored with the United States Automobile Association Award. She is a cadet battalion leadership development coordinator and a member of the Simultaneous Membership Program with the 1710th Transportation Company of the Virginia National Guard.
A nursing major with a 2.94 GPA, Potter is featured in "Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities". She also is a Black and Gold Society member as well as G Company, 19th Regiment, Scabbard and Blade Military Honor Society.
She was first sergeant of the Monarch Battalion Color Guard for the 2000-01 year and participated in the Ranger Challenge Competition Teams in 1999-2001.
