TEAMS DESCEND ON OLD DOMINION FEB. 23 FOR BLUE CRAB BOWL

The annual Blue Crab Bowl, an academic competition among teams of some of Virginia's best high school science students, will take place Saturday, Feb. 23, at Old Dominion University.

Twenty teams from Hampton Roads and throughout Virginia will travel to Old Dominion for the competition.
Teams consist of five students (four competitors and one alternate) and a coach. Students will answer multiple-choice or short-answer questions from the scientific and technical ocean science disciplines: physics, chemistry, geology, atmospheric science, biology, etc., as well as from topics on ocean-related national and international economics, history and culture.

Virginia's winning team will travel to Providence, R.I., to represent the commonwealth in a national competition with teams from 21 other states. The 2001 Blue Crab Bowl was won by Catholic High School of Virginia Beach.

The National Ocean Sciences Bowl is sponsored by the Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education in partnership with the National Marine Educators Association. The Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Virginia Sea Grant Consortium and Old Dominion's Department of Ocean, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences and the Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography are co-hosts for the Virginia competition known as The Blue Crab Bowl.
