NEW ASSISTANT VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC TECHNOLOGY APPOINTED

Andy Casiello, vice president for the National Technological University and PBS Business and Technology Network, has been appointed Old Dominion University's new assistant vice president for academic technology services.

Casiello, of Fort Collins, Colo., was hired by NTU in 1992 to finalize the development and deployment of the world's first digital compressed television satellite network. This original pioneering effort led to many new developments in distance education technologies using both satellite and TCP/IP-based networking systems. He is expected to begin his duties at Old Dominion sometime this month.

He also played a key role in integrating the PBS Business Channel within the NTU network and was part of the executive team that raised $22 million in venture funding for that project. Casiello also has a broad knowledge of higher education distance education technical systems and has negotiated contracts for satellite space segments and developed international delivery systems using streaming media and satellites.

Prior to joining NTU, Casiello was the director of engineering distance learning programs at the University of Massachusetts. During the early 1980s, he worked at two different community colleges in Massachusetts in a variety of technology-based positions including oversight of broadcast television studios and radio stations.

Casiello's appointment is subject to approval by the Board of Visitors.
