GALLERY EXHIBITION REEVALUATES MEANINGS ATTACHED TO OBJECTS

"The Opposite of History," an exhibition of assemblage by Rebecka Sasich, Susan Bacik, Deidre Prosen, Linda Foster Leonhard and Scott Williams will open with a free reception at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 at University Gallery, 350 W. 21st St., Norfolk.

Curated by gallery director Katherine Huntoon, "The Opposite of History" seeks to unravel the meaning of objects by placing them in new combinations and contexts. Huntoon selected work that addresses issues raised by the Octavio Paz poem "Object and Apparitions" written for Joseph Cornell. Each assemblage is constructed to blur preconceived boundaries so as to allow the observer to tour a landscape of real objects in surreal environments.

The exhibition continues through Feb. 17 and is open to the public noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; noon to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. For more information call 683-2355.
