CELLIST NATHANIEL ROSEN TO PERFORM IN CONCERT JAN. 28

Internationally acclaimed cellist Nathaniel Rosen will perform with the Virginia Chamber Players at 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, in Chandler Recital Hall of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center. The concert is free and open to the public, but seating is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis.

Rosen's career is marked by a series of significant accomplishments. At age 17 he toured the Soviet Union as a finalist in the Third International Tchaikovsky Competition. The youngest of the 42 competing cellists in the competition, he was one of three Americans to win a prize. Twelve years later he returned to Moscow and became the first gold medal-winning
American instrumentalist since Van Cliburn.

He is currently on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music and holds the Chauncey Devereux Stillman Chair for Distinguished Visiting Artist at Thomas More College of Liberal Arts in New Hampshire.

Rosen has served as principal cellist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and has been associated with Music from Marlboro and the popular "Monday Evening Concerts" in Los Angeles.

He served as artistic director of the Interlochen Summer Chamber Music Series and is a founding member of the Sitka Summer Music Festival.

Rosen's appearance is part of the F. Ludwig Diehn Concert Series partnership with the Virginia Symphony. This series is made possible by a grant from the F. Ludwig Diehn Music Fund of the Norfolk Foundation. For more information call
