BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2002 BEGINS TODAY

Old Dominion University's observance of Black History Month 2002, "Interpretations of Blackness," begins Feb. 1.

Events include:

"African Marketplace/Black History Month Kick Off," a re-creation of an authentic African marketplace featuring local vendors, 4-6 p.m., North Mall, Webb University Center.

"We Are the Rainbow People," a performance by the Old Dominion Speech Chorus, 6:30 p.m., Hampton/Newport News Room, Webb University Center.

"The Weakest Link," a competition based on African and African American history trivia, 7 p.m., River Rooms, Webb University Center.

Miss Ebony Old Dominion University Pageant, 12:30 p.m., South Mall, Webb University Center.

"The Stolen Legacy," a discussion of the influence of African traditions in black Greek-lettered organizations, 7:30 p.m., River Rooms, Webb University Center.

"Alpha Phi Alpha Scholarship Awards," honoring the African American student with the highest grade point average, 1 p.m., River Rooms, Webb University Center.

"Honey for the Spirit: Sisters Inspiring Sisters Through Literature and Lyrics," A program of poems, story excerpts and songs by black women, 4:30-6 p.m., Cape Charles Room, Webb University Center.

"The Harlem Renaissance," a program based on the mystique of a culturally unique time for black artists and performers, 8 p.m., Hampton/Newport News Room, Webb University Center.

"The New Slavery," an examination of the media, peer pressure and images of the Hip-Hop/R&B industry, 7 p.m., Hampton/Newport News Room, Webb University Center.

"Origins of Gospel Music," an examination of Negro spiritual music featuring speaker Michael Hucles, associate professor of history at Old Dominion, 7:30 p.m., Hampton/Newport News Room, Webb University Center.

"360 Degrees of Blackness," a program detailing how black culture has served as a major influence on modern society, 7:30 p.m., North Cafeteria, Webb University Center.

"African Leaders: Yesterday and Today," a viewing of media and art of past and present African leaders, noon, North and South malls, Webb University Center.

"I Want My 40 Acres and My Mule!", a mock trial presentation about the emerging slavery reparations movement, 2 p.m., room 104, Batten Arts and Letters Building.

"Fourth Annual East Coast Gospel Music Festival Concert," an evening of gospel music, 6 p.m., North Cafeteria, Webb University Center. $

"Higher Learning," a film screening and discussion about race on college campuses, 7-10 p.m., community room, Powhatan II Residence Hall.

Black History Month Annual Lecture by Na-im Akbar, psychologist and a pioneer in the development of an African-centered approach in modern psychology, 7 p.m., North Cafeteria, Webb University Center.
