Old Dominion University's observance of Black History Month 2002, "Interpretations of Blackness," begins Feb. 1.

"African Marketplace/Black History Month Kick Off," a re-creation of an authentic African marketplace featuring local vendors, 4-6 p.m., North Mall, Webb University Center.
"We Are the Rainbow People," a performance by the Old Dominion Speech Chorus, 6:30 p.m., Hampton/Newport News Room, Webb University Center.

"The Weakest Link," a competition based on African and African American history trivia, 7 p.m., River Rooms, Webb University Center.

Miss Ebony Old Dominion University Pageant, 12:30 p.m., South Mall, Webb University Center.
"The Stolen Legacy," a discussion of the influence of African traditions in black Greek-lettered organizations, 7:30 p.m., River Rooms, Webb University Center.

"Alpha Phi Alpha Scholarship Awards," honoring the African American student with the highest grade point average, 1 p.m., River Rooms, Webb University Center.
"Honey for the Spirit: Sisters Inspiring Sisters Through Literature and Lyrics," A program of poems, story excerpts and songs by black women, 4:30-6 p.m., Cape Charles Room, Webb University Center.

"The Harlem Renaissance," a program based on the mystique of a culturally unique time for black artists and performers, 8 p.m., Hampton/Newport News Room, Webb University Center.
