UNIVERSITY TO HONOR STUDENTS KILLED IN PENTAGON DURING VETERANS DAY CEREMONY TODAY

Old Dominion University will mark Veterans Day on Tuesday, Nov. 13, with a ceremony to rededicate the Alumni War Memorial plaque in its new location and to honor an alumnus and three students killed in the Sept. 11 attack on the Pentagon. Family members and friends of the victims are expected to attend.

The ceremony will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Kaufman Mall, in front of Webb University Center. Rear Adm. David Architzel, commander of Navy Region, Mid-Atlantic, will be the guest speaker. Both the Navy's Atlantic Fleet Band and the Old Dominion Men's Chorale will perform. A bugler from the Army Continental Band will play "Taps" and an honor guard from the U.S. Marine Corps Headquarters Support Battalion will render a 21-gun salute.

The plaque, which was sponsored by alumni who served in World War II, was originally dedicated in 1990 to the memory of former students who sacrificed their lives during wartime. More than 30 names are etched on the bronze memorial, which previously hung in the Koch Hall breezeway.

When unveiled Tuesday, the plaque will bear the additional names of Old Dominion alumnus Navy Cmdr. Robert Schlegel, and graduate students Navy Lt. Cmdr. Robert Elseth, Army Lt. Col. Karen Wagner and Army Spec. Four Craig Amundson, all of whom lost their lives in the terrorist attack on the Pentagon.
