OCEANOGRAPHER SYLVIA EARLE TO DELIVER PRESIDENT'S LECTURE TONIGHT

Oceanographer Sylvia Earle will address "Sustainable Seas �The Vision, The Reality" at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, for the Old Dominion University President's Lecture Series. The lecture will be held in the Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building auditorium and is free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Earle is the founder and chair of Deep Ocean Exploration and Research Marine Operations, an organization that designs and consults on manned and robotic sub-sea systems. In addition, she is the leader of the Sustainable Seas Expeditions, a five-year study of the National Marine Sanctuaries sponsored by National Geographic and funded by the Goldman Foundation.

An adjunct scientist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and a director of Kerr-McGee Inc., Earle also serves on various boards, foundations and committees, including the Duke University Marine Laboratory, the World Wildlife Fund and the Center for Marine Conservation.

Previously, Earle served as chief scientist of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and was the National Geographic Society's 1998 Explorer in Residence. She also served as the Center for Marine Conservation's Ambassador for the Oceans and was the spokesperson for Sea Wen.

Earle has led more than 10 expeditions throughout the world, including the first team of women aquanauts during the Tektite Project in 1970, and holds a depth record for solo diving at 1,000 meters.

She has written more than 100 publications on marine science and technology, including the 1995 book "Sea Change."
Earle earned her bachelor's degree from Florida State University and her master's and doctorate from Duke University.
