FOUNDER OF THE VANGUARD GROUP TO ADDRESS ECONOMICS CLUB DEC. 12

John Bogle, founder and former chairman of The Vanguard Group, will speak to Old Dominion University's Economics Club of Hampton Roads at a luncheon Wednesday, Dec.12.

Co-sponsored by Old Dominion's College of Business and Public Administration, the luncheon will begin at noon at the Sheraton Waterside Hotel in downtown Norfolk. Due to limited space, reservations are required. The cost of the luncheon is $30 for nonmembers.

The Vanguard Group is one of the two largest mutual fund organizations in the world, comprised of more than 100 mutual funds with current assets totaling more than $550 billion. Referred to as the father of index fund investing, Bogle created the first index mutual fund in 1975.

He was named Fund Leader of the Year in 1996 and one of the Financial Leaders of the 20th Century in 1997. He received the Woodrow Wilson award from Princeton University for distinguished achievement in the nation's service in 1999 and, later that year, was named by Fortune magazine as one of the investment industry's four Giants of the 20th Century.

Bogle is also a best-selling author. His latest book, "John Bogle on Investing: The First 50 Years," was published in September 2000.

A Princeton graduate, Bogle has received honorary degrees from Eastern College, Widener University, Albright College, University of Rochester and University of Delaware.

Mark Zandi will be the speaker at the next luncheon on Jan.15. His return engagement will provide the national forecast at the annual Economics Outlook Conference.
