BOOK ON FDR BY FORMER PRESIDENT ROLLINS REISSUED

A book published nearly 40 years ago by President Emeritus Alfred B. Rollins Jr. was reissued recently by Transaction Publishers.

Originally released in 1962 under the Knopf imprint, "Roosevelt and Howe" is a joint biography of Franklin D. Roosevelt and one of his principal advisers, Louis Howe. Howe was FDR's first political aide and the only one who also became an intimate personal friend. This latest version features a new introduction, titled "The Fourth Branch of Government."

"The book's reissue seems timely, given renewed interest in our government and White House presidential staffs," said Rollins. "It is the story of two men bound together by challenge and ambition as they participated in two major transitions, the development of modern mass media campaigns, and the evolution of White House staff as the fourth branch of government."

Rollins will give a talk on "FDR and the Modern Presidency" and read passages from his book and the new introduction at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Prince Books in downtown Norfolk.

Rollins was one of the earliest researchers in FDR papers and the first to explore the Howe papers.
