TWO HALL OF FAME PITCHERS TO KEYNOTE BASEBALL CLINIC

Hall of Fame pitchers Warren Spahn, the winningest left-hander in the game's history, and fireballer Bob Feller who threw three no hitters, will be the keynote speakers and clinicians for the 25th anniversary of the Greenwich Kitchens/Old Dominion University Baseball Clinic, Jan. 25 and 26.

Tickets for the clinic, which will be held in the Old Dominion University Fieldhouse on Jan. 26, are $5 for one session, beginning at 9 a.m.

The weekend begins on Friday, Jan. 25 with the ACS Systems "Meet the Stars" Banquet at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel, beginning with a social at 6:30 p.m. and dinner at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person and are on sale at the Old Dominion Athletic Ticket Office. Proceeds from the dinner and clinic go toward baseball scholarships at Old Dominion. The clinic was begun in 1978.

Spahn won 363 career games in 21 seasons, all but seven with the Boston/Milwaukee Braves. He was a 20-game winner 13 times, six years in a row and led the National League in wins eight times and complete games on nine occasions. He hurled two no-hitters and was the 1957 Cy Young Award winner.

In 1951, while pitching for the then-Milwaukee Braves, Spahn led the National League with seven shutouts and 26 complete games. In 1960, at the age of 39, he pitched a no-hitter and then in 1961 he threw another. In 1953, he was 23-7 and ten years later in 1963 he duplicated that 23-7 mark with a 2.60 earned run average. Spahn was inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame in 1973.

Nicknamed "Rapid Robert", Feller's fastball was clocked at over 100 miles per hour, along with his sweeping curve ball. He was the first major league pitcher to throw three no hitters. He compiled a 266-162 record, fanning 2,581 batters in 3,827 innings for a 3.25 career earned run average, despite missing four years due to service in the Navy. He was 27-11 with a 2.61 era in 1940, and was THE SPORTING NEWS PLAYER OF THE YEAR. He also compiled a 26-15 in 1946.

Feller led the American League in strikeouts on seven occasions, including the 1946 season when he fanned 346. He struckout 17 batters in a game as a Cleveland Indians' rookie in 1936, and topped that mark with 18 k's in a 1938 game. He threw three no-hitters and shares the Major League Record of 12 one-hitters with Nolan Ryan. Feller was inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.
