POLICE CHIEF ASSURES THREAT TO CAMPUS MAIL IS REMOTE

Cliff Rice, Old Dominion University's chief of police and director of public safety, has issued the following statement to the campus community regarding recent terrorist activity through the U.S. mail. Though Old Dominion has not been directly affected, additional precautions are being taken.

"In light of the recent incidents of mail handling issues around the country, the following information is provided.

"We are aware of the increased concerns on the part of the University community regarding mail service incidents that have occurred around the country. As you are probably aware, all incidents of mail contamination have been sent to national news organizations and national governmental leaders. Consequently, the likelihood of problems here are probably remote. We have very reason to feel safe in the university community, however, everyone should exercise increased caution.

"Old Dominion University handles over two million pieces of mail each year without incident. This amounts to over 7,000 pieces each day. We expect to maintain this record.

"If you see suspicious envelopes, packages etc., do not handle the item. Call University Police at 683-4000. The police dispatcher will ask a number of specific questions and give instructions at that time. Thank you for your continued calm and thoughtful response."
